Chapter 4 - Part 2 - Season Long Mysteries and ACAB
Sorry it has been a while, I just finished something new so I though I would come and post and I realized that I didn't post my last update. ^_^
Mysteries are a big part of We Used to Be Friends, and if you have the Ashcan version you'll know that it comes with two flavours: episode, and personal.
The full version comes with a new type. That's the Season mystery. Now in We Used to Be Friends, you're going to have a "campaign" mode where you will have a large mystery that ties the characters together and something they can investigate in bits and spurts over the course of your sessions. It should matter to your characters a lot.
They work the same as the others, except that they tend to be slightly more involved and because of the size of them you can't really spend your entire time on the season mystery. You can only use a move to place clues on the season mystery once per episode. It may sound like it would move slowly, which is the point, but if you've got 5 people playing that's up to 10 clues that can be placed if everyone succeeds at 10+ on their putting it all together. That's not particularly likely, but still, it's part of the process of stretching out the Season mystery.
There are some fun things that happen at the end of a season too! Everyone gets a year older, and you can do things like change playbooks, or graduate your character, or even just end the campaign and play something else. It's a great break to let things breathe if you want.
The second thing I did was just finish adding a 1500-word essay on why ACAB and why they need to be that way in your game. It took a while because I wanted to do the actual research on the topic. It wasn't exhaustive but I ended up reading a bunch of articles (about 15) and used about eight including some court case documentation to talk about police corruption and violence. I just wanted to make sure people reading the game knew where it stood on why you aren't going to find friendly police officers (or you may not have them for long) in your game.
Anyway, that's where I'm at for Chapter 4. Going to be going over the how to run a mystery game section next, and then how to play the game which is going to be expanded because every time I play it, I want to add something new to that section.
